Burning The Scale

A Diet-Buster: The Airport

by Claire on August 13th, 2007

cinnabon.jpgSeveral years ago, when I was about 16, I was en route to Salt Lake City with a stop in Houston, Texas. With a few hours to kill in the airport, we walked from one end to the other. Taking a look around, the only thing people seemed to be doing was eating. There were restaurants galore, punctuated by stands for Cinnabon, TCBY, Haagen-Dazs, etc. We stopped in one of the sit-down restaurants and I ate the only salad on the menu.
Nowadays in airports, it’s common to be surrounded by more calorie-filled treats than you can shake a stick at. With nothing to do but sit and wait, eating sounds pretty good. Here are a few tips to stay on track:

-Pick greens. There are cafe-type places that will at least have a salad, if nothing else. Make sure the dressing doesn’t have a lot of added sugar and if it does, use it sparingly.
-Burn off some of those extra calories. If you do indulge, many airports have gyms on the premises. Find out ahead of time if yours will have one by clicking here.
-Don’t have time to visit a restaurant? Most snack machines carry packages of nuts like peanuts or almonds. They’re low in carbs and high in protein and mono- and polyunsaturated fats (”good” fats) that will keep your hunger at bay until you have time to eat properly.

Think of being “good” at the airport as a preventative measure - once you’re on vacation, you’ll want to enjoy some meals out, and will probably exercise less. Have fun on your trip, and worry about your diet when you get back :)
