A Diet Tip From Health Guru Mark Sisson
Hi everyone. As you know, Mark Sisson of Mark’s Daily Apple (an excellent health blog) posted my top three weight loss tips on Friday. Today he is here to share one of his secrets to success:
Hi, I’m Mark Sisson and in the spirit of burning scales everywhere, I’ll share a pretty painless diet tip. One of my big “secrets” of maintaining a lean body (even at 53) is eating a massive, 20-ingredient salad for lunch. My staff jokingly refers to it as the Great Salad Love Affair. I’ve been doing “rabbit food” in my trusty Tupperware bowl for lunch since I was in my 30s, and I just don’t get the burgers and burritos. I honestly crave my salad because I make it interesting - peppers, tomatoes, seeds, toasted nuts, sprouts, cheeses or salmon or turkey, dried cranberries, you name it. I use a healthful dressing like balsamic vinegar, and I keep that aspect pretty spare (the purpose of tons of fruits and veggies in the salad is to give it some moisture in addition to the vitamins).
A salad may sound boring, but that’s only if you make it that way. A salad doesn’t even have to include lettuce. The great thing is that I feel like I’m pigging out because I’m getting so much filling, dense food - vegetables leave you feeling stuffed. But at most a salad - without all the croutons and ranch and fried chicken pieces - will only set you back 300 or 400 calories. Do that every day for lunch, and you’ll start losing a couple pounds a week fairly easily.
If you work, or have kids, or just get busy, do what I do: in the Sisson household we prep a week’s worth of salad ingredients ahead of time and have them in containers in the fridge, ready to go. Everyone can come and go and create the salads as they please, and there’s never the temptation to eat junk because there’s “nothing to eat”.
What a great tip for those of us who have trouble getting our veggies in. Thanks, Mark!

I’ve started eating a big salad everyday, and I can tell a difference in how I feel. Makes it a lot easier to get veggies. I actually started doing it because the dr. said I needed to get more leafy greeens for Anemia. So ladies, those dark greens will help you with iron deficiency, and in turn you’ll get more energy. I think I’m going to start adding even more stuff to my salads…

I had forgotten that dark leafy greens had iron in them. Thanks for the tip! Another reason to eat them over iceburg lettuce - which doesn’t have much nutritional value.
