Dairy For Weight Loss - Fact Or Fiction?

by Claire on December 18th, 2007

Got Milk?A few years back, the news was abuzz with a study done at the University of Tennessee that showed those who consumed three low-fat servings of dairy a day lost more weight and body fat than those who didn’t. Remember the name Michael Zemel? He led the study and the dairy industry had a field day with it. I remember being in the grocery store and hearing various commercials over the loudspeaker, urging me to buy skim milk and Yoplait yogurt.

The 24-in-24 campaign (24 ounces of milk in 24 hours) has been alive and well for quite some time. However, in the past year or so, the assertions that calcium causes weight loss have been questioned. For one thing, studies where the participants took a calcium supplement showed no weight loss.

Maybe it was something in the milk…

A new Tokyo study showed that it was actually the lactose in the milk (milk sugar) that caused weight loss (or prevented weight gain). Rats that were fed high-fat diets and also lactose gained less weight and less fat than the control group.

While this is promising research, just keep in mind that the overall composition of your diet (protein vs carbs vs fats) as well as calories determine weight gain or loss.

I love milk - but have always blamed it for my being overweight - I could easily drink a gallon a day (I don’t…lol). I can’t imagine that it could help you lose weight, really. This will be interesting to see how it progresses though, it truly is the hardest thing for me to give up. Hope youre doing well, Claire! *muah*

Hey Christina! I have the opposite problem - never could get myself to drink milk whether it’s skim or 2 percent, etc. I guess if it truly does cause weight loss I might have to…
    Milkshakes though, that’s another story… ;)

That’s interesting. I don’t know if there’s a correlation, but perhaps it depends on people. In my case, I know that if I end a meal by a yogurt (usually fat-free, but not always), it’s like it puts a real end to said meal, and I am not tempted to eat something else. Maybe this could be a reason–after all, if I’m not tempted to grab another dessert or snack one hour after my meal, it probably helps in losing weight, or at least not gaining any?

I’m sure it does help. Yogurt always seems like a mini-dessert to me, so maybe it does put an end to the meal.
My favorite is Fage 2 percent. Not exactly low fat but delicious all the same :)

    Hello, This is Mary

I am 36 years old with 2 toddlers. My youngest just started day care last week- which still feels a little strange. I haven’t had this much time to myself in years. First thing I want to do is lose the extra pounds I put on during the last pregnancy. One of the girls next door has suggested I join her walking group two days a week. After my first pregnancy I lost around 35 pounds using the Herbalife products, but when I called the man that sold them to me three years ago he told me this week he doesn’t sell them anymore. He told me to look on the internet. It’s disappointing because he was really nice and he called me regularly to make sure I was using their products correctly. It was nice to have someone checking in with me every week to see how I was and it kept me motivated.

I searched on the internet for someone that sells Herbalife in New Jersey. I found many websites but I don’t want
just to buy the products, I want to find someone trustworthy that sells the products so I can also meet them and get started again.

Could anybody here recommend someone in New Brunswick?
    .

    Thanks, Mary

I recently heard and became aware of the calcium and weight loss correlation. Its only been a few weeks since I have been conciously inlcuding dairy products into my daily diet. We will see how it works!
