From Fat To Fit - Shaq’s Big Challenge

I caught a preview of the show “Shaq’s Big Challenge” on ABC while I was flipping through channels, and I decided to watch it when it came out. The premise of the show is that basketball star Shaquille O’Neal takes on six overweight kids and puts them on a diet and exercise regimen to get them healthy.
The first episode was interesting, albeit a little corny in parts with Shaq mugging for the camera and dramatic voice-overs talking about the obesity epidemic while showing video clips of random American kids’ stomachs and butts (I never understood that. Do they tell the people they’re going to film their stomachs for a TV show about how fat everyone is? “Hey, excuse me, your fat stomach is perfect for our show. Mind if I get a little footage?”)
Anyway, the part I found interesting, and kind of sad, is that most of the kids were morbidly obese. I had never heard of that label attributed to a child. After that the kids were told to go to a designated gym 5 days a week, but they ended up slacking off. So in the next episode they got a personal trainer who won’t take no for an answer. Drama, drama!
The good thing about this show is that Shaq is going to school boards to get mandatory PE, and is trying to change other things about public school systems, like cafeteria food. Good luck, Shaq!
You can see “Shaq’s Big Challenge” on ABC every Tuesday at 9 PM ET.
