From Yoga to Aikido and Everything In Between
This week I had a breakthrough. That is to say that the hubs had a breakthrough about me and my need to be active. For me my weight-loss is closely tied to my ability to relieve stress. Exercise is my stabilizer, my coping mechanism. So I told the hubs I wanted to start taking Bikram yoga. My gorgeous, skinny, leggy friend recently tried it with her equally gorgeous sister and said it kicked her butt. Being the masochist that I am I said, “hey I need to try that”. It’s certainly not going to make me a tall model but I was hoping it would sweat out the toxins and get me a tighter tush. I’ve done Hatha and Ashtanga Yoga many times but every time the excitement and motivation quickly fizzled. Hubs understandably was incredulous given my track record. For my college graduation present he bought me six months of classes at the new studio in our little neighborhood. I flaked and stopped going after about a month.
So being the perceptive and forgiving husband that he is damn him, he had a lightbulb moment about my reignited desire
to do yoga. He said I need something that was higher intensity that combined that spiritual, centering aspect of yoga. Well, umm, wouldn’t Bikram do that? He said, well maybe but why don’t you try something like Karate or Aikido first? So I did a little research and I think he was…right. I’ll never repeat that. I think Aikido sounds like a really good fit for me. Long story short, I have two trial classes over the next two weeks. One at the chi-chi Bikram center and one at the Dojo down the street. I will keep you updated on which one really grabs me. Right now I can’t decide if sweating bullets sounds better than pretending to kick someone’s ass. At least now I have an excuse to go buy some new cute workout clothes. Yeah me.
