Good Calories, Bad Calories
I picked up this month’s Elle to read on the plane and was so excited to find an interview with low-carb enthusiast Gary Taubes. He’s written an extensive book called Good Calories, Bad Calories that is coming out on Tuesday and has been anxiously awaited by the low-carb community (including me!).
His claims are controversial, and I imagine his book will be even more so. He explained to the interviewer that excess carbs can cause everything from cancer to Alzheimer’s. I didn’t really understand the science of it, but apparently cancer cells feed on glucose - so if you don’t provide them anything to feed on, they’ll die off. (There’s an excellent article in Time about the effects of a low-carb diet on cancer patients).
Overall, I think many will be enlightened about the detrimental effects of carbs, especially simple carbs, on LDL cholesterol and weight. However, I’m sure plenty will bash Mr. Taubes for making highly unpopular claims.
You can pre-order Good Calories, Bad Calories on Amazon right now for $18.45. Let me know how you like it, and I’ll be sure to post a review after I’m done reading it.
