Good Food, Bad Food - The FDA Decides
In Britain, there is a food-labeling “traffic light” system that consists of either a green, yellow or red dot to signal that the food is low, medium, or high in fat, sugar, etc. The FDA has just opened a 2-day-long meeting to decided whether simliar measures will be taken in the U.S. (MSNBC)
This won’t happen immediately and it will likely take years before you start seeing the symbols in your local supermarket - if at all.
My concern is that a food that was high in fat - such as cheese or full-fat yogurt - would automatically be labeled red, while something low in fat would be labeled green, making it a “good food.” For instance, white bread is low in fat, as well as salt. But we know it isn’t a “good” food because it converts to sugar in the bloodstream very quickly.
If you want to avoid the whole dilemma as to whether a packaged food is worth buying, consider shopping the perimeter and buying only whole foods - they’re all you need anyway. Aside from dairy, I really doubt that these foods will be subject to labeling.
