Is Counting Calories a Thing of the Past?

by Claire on September 30th, 2007

calculator.jpgAn article at MSNBC seems to think so. They say that when people focus on calories, they end up consuming low-fat foods (such as 100 Calorie Packs, my nemesis) that are ultimately unsatisfying.
I tend to agree. I counted calories for years and thought I’d found great “bargains” in a 150 calorie protein bar or low-fat chips with only 120 calories per serving. The reality? These foods would be packed with sugar and starches, leaving me hungry for more (and there’s nothing more frustrating than reaching your calorie limit at 4 in the afternoon).
Some of their tips, like adding more protein to each meal and snack to curb hunger, drinking more water, and eating more fruits and veggies are great. I would add that the emphasis should be on veggies, because fruit can be high in sugar and pack on calories faster than you think. Some fruits that are low in sugar include raspberries, strawberries and cherries as well as most melons.
The article also mentioned consuming a salad at lunch and dinner. Be careful there. Most people adorn their salads with a ton of dressings and toppings that can add up to over 1000 calories. Especially if you get a salad in a restaurant, you need to be cautious about what might be in it. Ask them to go easy on the cheese and dressing!
Basically, if you’re consuming mostly meat (seafood, beef or chicken, ec), dairy, fruits and vegetables, and nuts and seeds, you don’t have to worry about counting every calorie. Keep it whole, and natural. Don’t bring low-fat junk food in the house.

Hope this helps!
