Kids With Personal Trainers

by Claire on June 25th, 2007

From the title, you probably are thinking of some incredibly rich, spoiled kids whose parents don’t know what to do with them (at least, that’s what I thought!). But apparently around 1 million kids have personal trainers these days. Parents will actually shell out the $40-plus per session so their kids can get in better shape (MSNBC).
In an age of video games and fast food, it’s no wonder that kids are becoming overweight. Parents are busy and just get whatever’s quickest and cheapest. But - enough with the forced “gym” exercises! What did kids do decades ago to get in shape? They went out to play! That’s right, they actually went outside and ran around and got dirty.
I was born in the 80s and even I remember spending most nice days outside with my friends. Between that and an hour of recess every day at school, we didn’t need a personal trainer of any sort.
Like I said in the recent post about child obesity, we need to get back to basics and get the kids outside. Paying gyms to make them do cardio and pushups is not the answer.
What do you think about this? Would you send your child to a personal trainer? Let me know in the comments!

I agree with you. And one more thing. Instead of paying someone else, I as a parent will be my kid’s trainer. By going for a walk, play throw and catch in the backyard, even dance crazy in the living room, etc..A quality time with the kids plus exersice, and FUN.

I agree. A trainer for kids to get exercise? No, they shoudl put down the video game controller, click off the MySpace page and go outside and just play.

Do these kids think it’s fun to be forced to excersize. What will happen when they get older and no one is there to “train” them?

Thanks Jon and Dexie for the comments. Jon, I’m sure the kids don’t enjoy it at all. Makes me think of that show, “Shaq’s Big Challenge” where the kids are forced to work with a trainer (more about that later!)
