Obesity Is Rampant In The South
You can imagine how thrilled I was to see this data come out about each state’s percentage of obese folks. Tennessee ranks fifth - with 27.8 percent of the state being obese. Mississippi takes the cake (no pun intended) with 30.6 percent.
It’s no lie that here in the South we like our fried chicken and anything deep fried, grits, etc. The popular eatery Cracker Barrel does a huge business here in Tennessee, with some of the greasiest Southern fare you can imagine.
The MSNBC article I read about this also mentioned poverty as a possible connection to the amount of overweight and obese people here. It is true that it’s more expensive to buy healthy food, and I think those who can afford it underestimate this.
I don’t see this improving in the near future - I think eating this way is ingrained into our culture to some extent.
If you want to go somewhere where people eat healthy and are active, consider Colorado - only 17 percent of its population is obese there. (Probably due to all the hiking and skiing opportunities!)
