Programs Expanded To Combat Childhood Obesity

by Claire on November 30th, 2007

Fat kidChildhood obesity is at an all-time high. With kids increasingly sedentary (MySpace, video games) and eating high-fat, high-carb diets, government programs such as We Can! (stands for Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity & Nutrition) are being expanded.

We Can! is a 2-year initiative that puts the majority of the responsibility on the shoulders of the parents. Indeed, young children often don’t know what’s best for them. It’s up to the parents to encourage exercise, feed their kids right and model the correct behaviors.

Schools are also teaching kids about nutrition and to read labels checking for calories, fat, et cetera.

Does anyone else think it’s sad that the government thinks it’s necessary for children to get involved in exercise programs or count calories? What happened to eating when you were hungry and stopping when you were full? What happened to playing outside with friends? Surely these kids still have some sense of that. They shouldn’t have to grow up so early!

Do you think the new government initiatives are a good idea or a bad idea? Let me know in the comments!
