SlimFast Shakes - As Healthy As They Sound?

by Claire on June 14th, 2007

I started dieting at the tender age of fourteen (mind you, I wasn’t overweight in the slightest - just insecure). One day I went to the drugstore to pick up a few things and I came across a brand I now know well - SlimFast. I found that the chocolate shakes were delicious, and at only 200 calories, they had to be helping me lose weight - right?
It was only in the last year or so that I started doubting that these shakes were really that great for me. For one thing, drinking them made me extremely hungry. I also discovered the bars, which I was not able to keep in the apartment for fear that I’d eat them all in one sitting! So what was it? Was I going to have to stop buying this stuff?
You’d be surprised that I hadn’t done this before, but I took a look at the nutritional information. Big surprise - one shake has 34 grams of sugar! Talk about unhealthy!
These days I know the SlimFast plans are really just a crock. These products won’t help you lose weight, the sugar will just increase your cravings. If you want a decent protein shake, Muscle Milk (which is low in sugar) or Designer Whey (sugar free) are much better options.

I must check out the Designer Whey that you mentioned. I’m supposed to monitor my sugar intake for medical reasons and sometimes it’s really hard. Thanks for advice.

    No problem :)
If you go to buy them, I would recommend drugstore.com - when I last visited GNC, they mentioned that they would no longer be carrying them.
The chocolate kind is the best!
