Spot Reducing: Fact or Fiction?
You’ve probably heard over and over that if you have a big stomach, you should do crunches. However, experts have made it clear that exercising one part of your body won’t result in targeted fat loss. You can do all the crunches you want, but the fat won’t go away without cardio and a proper diet.
However, I read an article in an old issue of FitnessRX for Women mentioning a study in Denmark where it was proven that spot reduction was possible. The idea was to intensely train one part of your body, and afterwards apply heat for 20-30 minutes. The men who did this seemed to have good results.
I was just thinking about this study today, as I wished for a smaller waist without being smaller all over. Maybe intense training of the obliques, followed by the heat technique mentioned in FitnessRx, would work.
It’s worth mentioning that this was a small study - only 10 men participated - so if you really want fat loss, you’ll probably have to settle for losing fat all over (the last place you will lose it from, is where you gained it first).
