Super-Sneaky Work Exercise Tricks

by meielisawy on May 3rd, 2008

Little LaptopClenching your behind? Doing super-secret kegels? I’ve read countless exercise article that talk about just those types of workouts, but honestly, I never do ‘em. When I’m on the coach or at my desk, I just don’t remember these techniques. . . but I do other things to try to keep myself active during the day. Some of these might seem a little unusual, but they’re ways that I have found keep me looking and feeling better despite being at a desk for about 12-14+ hours per day.

My Secret Daily Exercise Routine:

  • I take the “scenic route.” Instead of taking the most direct way to the restroom, I get up and walk all the way around the house just to get the the bathroom. It’s just an extra “lap,” but I make sure that I do it whenever I get up from my desk.
  • I use a regular chair. I have noticed that when I use a roller chair, I simply “glide” from one place to another without getting up. It I need to grab something behind me, I just push my chair backwards and grab it. But when I use a heavy wooden chair, I’m more likely to *lift* it a little to pull it in, move it more with my arms, and generally not rely on it to scoop halfway across the room to get something! If you are concerned about ergonomics, boost this old-fashioned seat with lumbar supports in memory foam.
  • I don’t keep everything stockpiled at my desk. Honestly, I had a desk filled to bursting with all of my supplies, but now I only keep the essentials nearby. If I need to get those Prismacolor pencils or special file folders, I have them stored upstairs in my house, which makes me climb an extra couple of flights during the day. This one should be applied with caution– if you store too many things out of reach, you’ll just force yourself to stop using them all.
  • I use an adjustable desk. Do you know those drafting tables that you can adjust up and down? I have one now, which means that not only can my desk be used for lots of extra things, but I stay a little bit more active by cranking it up and down throughout the day.
  • And one last trick… only slightly exercise-related: I keep all my cellulite-busting creams near my work station. You might think that those would be better off in the restroom where I would have to walk to them, but I use them in moments of boredom. I will rub in my Nivea on my arms and legs when I’m in shorts and a t-shirt at home… This one might only work if you spend your time toiling in your house, but if you do work in an office, buy the best anti-age hand cream and apply it often. You’ll be surprised at how often you use it when you are feeling the day crawl by. ; )

I hope you try some of these new techniques. You’ll really feel a difference, and I believe that your day will go by faster, too!
