Trans Fat Free? Not Quite…
New York City has been requiring restaurants to cook in trans-fat-free oils (something I think all restaurants should do!). But the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) found that Burger King and Wendy’s fries, in particular, still contain more trans fat than is recommended in a day (2g).
A serving of Burger King fries had 3.3 g of trans fat, and Wendy’s fries had 3.7.
Trans fat is notorious for increasing your waistline beyond what makes sense for the calories you ate, causing your good cholesterol to go down, and upping your risk for heart disease. This stuff is toxic and I think it’s a crime that some restaurants haven’t complied (on the contrary, McDonald’s fries had only .2g in them).
You can limit your trans fat intake by staying away from fried foods and checking for “partially hydrogenated” oils on ingredient lists (don’t trust a label that says “trans fat free” without checking first!)
