Weight Loss Drug Not To Be Approved In US

by Claire on June 30th, 2007

I’ve been reading about the weight loss drug Accomplia (rimonabant) that is already available overseas and was being reviewed for whether or not it would come to the US.
It turns out that’s not going to happen anytime soon. Apparently Accomplia can cause suicidal thoughts in those who take it. Still, many people are buying it online for the weight loss effect (it is supposed to reduce appetite).
I’m guessing that Accomplia affects the serotonin in your brain, which in turn affects the appetite. I’m only speculating, but antidepressants, which increase the uptake of serotonin in your brain, also increase appetite, so perhaps Accomplia works by decreasing the available amount of serotonin.
I hope it’s becoming more obvious to people that you can’t have your cake and eat it too. I already posted about Alli, which has some very unsavory side effects. Suicidal thoughts are even worse!
It’s all about diet and exercise, people!

2 opinions for Weight Loss Drug Not To Be Approved In US

Rimonabant blocks the endocannabinoid receptors, that, when activated are suposed to induce sedentary lifestyle and increase appetite.

This was seen as a lot of people with critical diseases uses marihuana to increase (or at least have some) appetite and feel better.

This is the difference between other wight loss drugs, that do involve serotonin uptake, and so, can affect cardiovascular structures.

It seems that our own cannabinoids are related also with happiness and analgesia, and that is why this drug (that blocks this action) is not recommended for being used in people with a chronic depression or other psychological disorders.

Anyway, I do agree with you. Diet and excercise is the healthiest way, for your body, mind and self love.
